Description
In the centre of Oneglia is one of the most popular and appreciated places in Imperia: Borgo Peri , which with its blue flag beaches , its renowned clubs and its seafront promenade offers relaxing days and fun evenings full of good humour.
Once past the Molo Lungo of Calata Cuneo in Oneglia , you will find an enchanting and very popular place in Imperia : Borgo Peri , appreciated for its promenade along the sea and its beaches , among the most beautiful in the city, so much so that they have been awarded the blue flag .
Despite being located in the very centre of Oneglia , Borgo Peri has the typical appearance of Ligurian seaside villages , with its pretty pastel-coloured houses overlooking the sea.
According to legend , Peri was founded by a shipwrecked Corsican, who taught the fishing trade to all the inhabitants from the countryside, refugees from the ruins of Castelvecchio, the original nucleus of Oneglia . The name "Peri", however, derives from the name of the Petri, an ancient family from Oneglia .
In the beautiful, central square where the promenade begins, there are rides and children's games ; next to it, there's a large parking lot that runs along the pier. In the summer, during the feast of San Giovanni , Oneglia's ancient patron saint, this area is transformed into a large, equipped space hosting stands, inflatable games, dance floors , and festivals .
The Spianata , as the charming seaside promenade is called, begins at Molo Lungo, close to the beaches and sheltered by palm trees. It extends eastward past bars, kiosks, and equipped beaches to the Rabina, a small green oasis by the sea , with a children's playground and an amphitheater where, by day, kids whizz around on rollerblades and, in the evening, you can attend events, demonstrations, and concerts . The promenade gradually becomes quieter, moving away from the attractions and approaching the more pristine beaches , such as the pebble and rocky Galeazza .
The beautiful Blue Flag beach is popular with water sports enthusiasts like snorkeling and spearfishing . When the wind blows and the waves are high, Galeazza becomes a haven for board sports like surfing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing .
The beaches , bars and kiosks make Borgo Peri one of the most popular places even in the evening where the nightlife lights up with the music of the discos .
There's also the opportunity to spend some quiet time discovering the history of this village by visiting the Church of Our Lady of Loreto . This building, traces of which date back to the 16th century , had various functions: from a convent, it became a school, a seminary, a shelter for the sick, and the home of several brotherhoods.
Among the works of art on display are a crucifix from the late 18th or early 19th century, the statue of Saint Martin , created by Giuseppe Pellegno in 1797, and a 19th-century Stations of the Cross . An urn contains the relics of Saint Felix , donated in 1829 by Cardinal Giorgio Doria Pamphili.
