The Oratory of San Pietro is located a few steps from the Logge di Santa Chiara , in one of the most suggestive points of the Parasio promontory.

The current Baroque building likely developed over an older structure dating back to the 12th century . Evidence of its medieval origins is the precious bell tower, built on one of the ancient fortified towers of Porto Maurizio's city walls.

In 1599 the Confraternity of the Disciplinanti of San Pietro obtained permission to settle in the Oratory and expand it.

Even today the building is the seat of the Confraternity of St. Peter and maintains a lively religious function.

In addition to liturgical celebrations, the Oratory also hosts weddings, cultural events and concerts , particularly of classical, choral and sacred music.

Among the most significant works is the wooden statue of St. Peter from 1731 , the protagonist of the traditional procession every year on June 29th.

During the procession, the statue is carried on the shoulders of the brothers, who run up the steep steps of St. Peter's .

Of particular interest are also the long carved wooden benches , which in the past were sometimes used during meetings of the Porto Maurizio city parliament.

Mass is celebrated in dialect every first Saturday of the month : at 6.30 pm in the summer and at 5.30 pm in the winter .

According to legend, the crucifix of the Black Christ , now preserved in the Oratory, was found by the brothers of St. Peter in 1616 on the beach near San Lazzaro , where it was washed ashore by a storm. The wooden statue was completely restored in 2004 , recovering its original color.
