Description
The port of Oneglia , with Calata Cuneo and its docks, offers moments of tranquility, where you can enjoy a sunny stroll overlooking the city and its colorful houses. Evenings are spent enjoying good food and entertainment thanks to the many characteristic eateries under the porticoes, overlooking the sea.
Imperia is famous for its excellent and tasty extra virgin olive oil , but its ancient maritime vocation remains strong today. One of the places where the connection with the sea is most evident is the characteristic port of Oneglia , bordered by the porticoes of Calata Cuneo , topped by the colorful fishermen's houses, a distinctive feature of Ligurian villages . Until a few years ago, an exclusively commercial area, it is now one of the most charming places for a stroll or to take part in the nightlife .
Calata Cuneo is embraced by two piers, the “ short pier ”, which is part of the port area, and the “ long pier ”: a thin promenade that extends to the open sea offering a marvelous view of the port , the colourful houses of Oneglia, including the birthplace of Admiral Andrea Doria (Oneglia 1466 – Genoa 1560), the extravagant tower of Villa Grock immersed in the greenery and, in the distance, also the Parasio hill in Porto Maurizio .
On the quayside of the port of Oneglia it is easy to meet fishermen on their boats, just returned with " boxes " of freshly caught fish , which they sell to the historic fishmongers under the arcades of Calata Cuneo with the evocative fish auction at sunset .
For those who don't feel like cooking, there are numerous traditional restaurants under the shade of the porticoes. Among the Imperia specialties, absolutely worth trying, the most famous is the " pizzallandrea " (Andrea-style pizza), topped with tomatoes, unpeeled garlic, salted anchovies , Taggiasca olives , and strictly local extra virgin olive oil .
After a delicious dinner, you can sip a glass of wine or a drink in one of the bars along the quayside, admiring the vibrant port life . In the summer, the bars often host live music bands, transforming the Calata Cuneo quayside into an open-air party.
For the people of Imperia, it's a must-attend event at the two city events celebrated at the port of Oneglia: New Year's Eve and the feast of St. John the Baptist , Oneglia's patron saint, on June 24th , illuminated by a spectacular fireworks display over the sea. During the week of celebration, the Oneglia docks are filled with stalls offering typical local delicacies, as well as sporting events and shows, with music for dancing until late at night.
