The Prarola Tower

One of Imperia's most picturesque and unique monuments is undoubtedly the Prarola Tower . It is an ancient defensive tower close to the coast, surrounded by the clear waters of the Ligurian Sea , built on the Premartello rock, at the foot of the cliff near Borgo Prino in Porto Maurizio .

The small bastion is about four meters high and has a conical structure that has allowed the tower to withstand the force of the sea waves over time. Dating back to the sixteenth century, it was part of a defensive complex that served to defend Porto Maurizio from Saracen attacks. It was built in two years, from 1562 to 1564 , following an incursion by Barbary pirates from North Africa . The community of the Prino stream valley requested and obtained permission from Genoa to build a lookout system for the defense of the population, consisting of a tower near San Lorenzo and another in the Prarolo area. During the night watch, this small construction housed six men whose task was to signal any enemies approaching from the sea; in case of alarm, the message was transmitted thanks to smoke or fire signals.

Today, the stone tower is smoothed by frequent storm surges. From the surrounding cliffs, from the Via Aurelia, from one of the piers in Borgo Prino, or directly from the sea, from which you can reach the rock on which the tower stands, you can admire a splendid panorama , take romantic sunset photos, or sunbathe lulled only by the sound of the sea crashing against the rocks.

In this little corner of paradise the water is particularly clear and the natural environment is suitable for relaxing boat trips and snorkeling .
